Child Safe Environment Training

'Through their eyes' (Formerly knowns as Child safe environments) has been developed by the Department of Human Services in line with the Children and Young People (Safety) Act 2017, and explores child abuse and the legal obligation for mandated notifiers to report suspicion of risk of harm in Children and Young people. This program is suitable for all South Australians not working in an Education setting.

About the Course

Safe Environments training is for people working or volunteering with children. This short course is designed to help organisations to support their employees and volunteers to recognise, report and respond to children or young people who may be at risk of harm.

Course Outline

  • Child protection in context
  • Through their eyes: values and attitudes
  • Risk and harm: South Australian legislation
  • Risk and harm: abuse related trauma
  • Sexual abuse
  • Through their eyes: disclosure
  • Child safe environments in organisations
  • Reporting suspicion of risk and harm

For anyone working or volunteering with children, this Child Safe Environments course is highly recommended if not compulsory depending on the line of work or as part of their study requirements. Child Safe Environments - Through Their Eyes (CSE) is a full-day course that supports participants to recognise, report, and respond to children or young people who may be at risk of harm.

Under the Children and Young People (Safety) Act 2017, certain professionals and volunteers including:

  • doctors
  • nurses
  • social workers
  • educators
  • carers
  • babysitters

are legally required to notify the Department for Child Protection if they suspect on reasonable grounds that a child or young person is being, or has been, abused or neglected. Students participating in professional placements involving children/young people under 18 are mandated notifiers and have a legal responsibility to report suspected child abuse or neglect.

The Government of South Australia wants children and young people to be safe from harm, do well at all levels of learning and have life skills, enjoy a healthy lifestyle and be active citizens with a voice and influence in the community. To achieve this, every person in South Australia must protect and promote these outcomes and ensure children and young people feel safe, valued, respected and encouraged to reach their potential.
